Grocery Stores - The following supermarkets have "western"
products.
- Jason's
-Lower level, Raffles City Mall - City Hall MRT stop and other
locations on Orchard Rd. (Accepts credit cards.)
-
Carrefour -
Levels 3 & 4 Suntec City Mall, City Hall MRT stop.
(Accepts credit cards.)
-
Cold Storage
- Tiong Bahru MRT station and at many other locations in the city.
The one with the most comprehensive selection of
"Western" items is at Jelita on Holland Rd., but you must
take a taxi from the Clementi MRT station. (Does NOT accept credit cards.)
- There are hundreds of other supermarkets and
"wet" markets all over the city and at every housing block.
The unpleasant odor you will smell at the store is a local fruit
"delicacy" called Durian. They are banned on the buses and
MRT for obvious reasons.
Internet Access -
Many cyber cafes all over the city. Our favorite is Singnet
Level 3, Raffles City Shopping Centre, City Hall MRT station.
Postal Services - All over the city
and in most shopping centers.

Photo Developing -
RGB Color - 103 Beach
Rd. 01-10 Premier Centre - near City Hall MRT stop. This is
like a professional lab and the best place we have found to develop
photos and slides. They do an excellent job and do not cost anymore
than the "express" labs. The shop is about a 10 minute
walk up Beach Rd. from City Hall MRT,
but definitely worth the walk. Shopping Centers -
- Electronics -
Sim Lim Square near Bugis MRT and Funan
Plaza near City Hall MRT.
- Cables, connectors and computer parts -
UF Technology at #03-69 in Sim Lim
Square.
- Clothes and all else - Orchard
Rd. (Dhoby Gaunt, Somerset and Orchard MRT stops) - too numerous to
mention. Suntec
City at City Hall MRT Liz Claiborne store at
Scotts Road Shopping Centre, Level 2, has "western" sizes. Get
off at Orchard MRT station and follow signs to Scotts Road.
Banks/ATMS -
All over the city and at most shopping
centers and MRT
stations. |

Buses - Buses
are prolific throughout the city. Each bus interchange station has
information about destinations and schedules. They run approximately every
8 minutes. You may use either cash or an MRT fare card for the
fare. (You must turn over the fare card when inserting it in the
Bus card readers.) Taxis - Taxis are plentiful in the city and at the shopping center
at Boon Lay and generally reasonably priced. You can find taxi
queue stations all throughout the city. Just stand in the queue and
wait your turn. You can also flag down taxis or call one for pickup.
- Comfort Cab

- Premier Cab

Subway - The
Singapore MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is one of the safest, cleanest and most
efficient, mass transit system we have encountered. The
trains run approximately every 2-5 minutes and are very easy to use.
Each station has information on routes and fares. Fare Cards - A fare card
system is used for both the MRT and buses.
MRT - Purchase either a single-use fare card for the
exact fare to the MRT stop to which you are going or a multi-fare card for as little as
$10 (plus a $2.00 deposit on the card) at the TransitLink kiosk located at
all MRT stations.
Bus - (You
must card turn over when inserting it in the Bus card readers.)
Buses will accept cash, but the cash fare is more than when using a card.
Once
used up, the multi-use fare card can be topped up at the TransitLink kiosk.

Chandleries -
Marintech is a
small Chandlery
located at 101 Kitchener Rd., #02 Jalan Besar Plaza. To get
there take the MRT Green (East-West) line to the Lavender
stop. It is about a 10 minute walk from there to Kitchener Rd. Hardware Store - Handyman
Centre, 1 Scotts Rd., #04-06/07, Shaw Centre. Phone
6737 7815. This small store has a reasonable selection of
hardware (not much in the way of marine items, though) and is
organized similar to ones in the US. To get here, take the
MRT to either City Hall or Raffles Place and transfer to the Red
(North-South) line to the Orchard stop.

but these are all rather pricey. Take the MRT (Green line) to
Tanjong Pagar stop. Exit the station and walk SW down either
Shenton Way or Anson Rd. about km toward the AYE and the
container port. The shop is on the ground level in the
building on the corner between these two roads and the AYE
expressway. Safety Equipment - Safety

This is a charming hotel located in the heart of "Little
India." It is close to the Bugis MRT station, Sim Lim
Square/Tower and the heart of the inner city. It is one of the more
reasonably priced places to stay in Singapore.
Triva: Mobile phone
SIM cards can be purchased for all GSM digital phones at any of the
telecom providers. This allows you to make local and overseas phone
calls, although overseas calls will be cheaper if you also use an
international phone card.
